Catalogue Raisonné

Catalogue Raisonné Magdaleny Abakanowicz was commissioned by Jan Kosmowski. It is a scholarly publication authored by Dr. Jolanta Gola and edited by Prof. Alina Drapella Hermansdorfer. The publication was issued by the All That Art Foundation, in cooperation with the Marta Magdalena Abakanowicz Kosmowska Foundation and Jan Kosmowski. Scientific reviews were provided by Dr. Elżbieta Kal and Prof. Waldemar Baraniewski.
Work on the catalog lasted from 2015 to 2021. The publication includes a calendar of Magdalena Abakanowicz's life and a list of all known works of the artist revealed until 2019. It is about 1,500 items, along with a bibliography and indexes. The catalog was published in two volumes in Polish-English version.
The partner of the project is artinfo.pl

“Dr. Jolanta Gola's attempt to organize the factography on the life and works of Magdalena Abakanowicz and prepare a comprehensive catalog of her works deserves recognition and respect. The author has done a tremendous amount of research work, collecting facts and accounts, organizing often unknown materials. Her study has a clear authorial character, while maintaining the universal shape of a “reasoned catalog.” The “Calendar” she has compiled will undoubtedly become an essential point of reference for further work on the work of Magdalena Abakanowicz. Similarly, the “Catalog”, which reveals the enormity of the artist's achievements and illustrates the transformations taking place in her work.”

“The set of Abakanowicz's works, prepared by Dr. Jolanta Gola, includes almost one thousand five hundred items - which are individual works or their ensembles - and is divided into six parts (sections or chapters, both terms are used interchangeably), preceded by the author's commentary. They deal, in turn, with: I. Juvenilia, or student works, mainly gouaches and painted and printed fabrics, II. painting, III. tapestries (from 1960-1986), IV. installations made of fabrics and ship's ropes, V. sculpture (this is the largest part of the compilation). The last, VI. section compiles varia, i.e. various artifacts and objects made by the artist. Each item includes a metric of the work - title, date, material, dimensions, signatures, place of storage, participation in exhibitions - a source/documentation note, a bibliography selected according to the rules described in the editorial commentary, and possibly a brief annotation of a particular object or assemblage - dating, changes in location, etc. - and sometimes a citation from the literature on the subject. Most items are accompanied by photographs, sometimes in several shots presenting the work or ensembles in a gallery space or open air. The catalog section is preceded by an extensive, detailed Calendar, in which events in Abakanowicz's artistic life, presented in chronological order, are often accompanied by quotations commenting on them (e.g., the artist's statements) and a list of bibliographic items published in a given year.”
